About the Book:
The book is a collection of short stories written by noted playwright, poet and writer, Dharamvir Bharati, between the years 1955 and 1969.
The stories are mostly located in rural and semi rural settings, they use a similar linguistic tone and colloquial words that take you to the world created by Bharati. There is no direct attempt at providing detailed descriptions, yet through the eyes of the characters, the detailing in the settings unfolds along with the story. The beauty of the stories lies in the subtle undertones in each character’s actions and words. There are no major twists and turns. It is this that lends a somewhat contradictory, but complex, monotony to the lives of the characters.
Set in the mid-twentieth century, the stories highlight the financial, social and educational struggle of the underpriviliged in India. Another recurrent theme is that of dealing with illness. The effects of prolonged illness and its effects on the patient’s psychological state, his/her relations with family and the financial burden on the family lend a darkness to the stories.
