Author: Herman Hesse
Reading Time: about 8 metro rides
About the Book:
The book is about the journey of a young man towards finding himself. The various people he meets, the places he visits and things he does have been put together in an interesting tale. It has many twists and turns that can sound both like the biography of a great sage and like a routine movie story. It is both a book of lifestyle management and the biography of a fictional spiritual leader. To me it is a lucid tale, written powerfully to play with someone’s imagination. In fact, written powerfully enough that the lines between the real and the imaginary often blur. Ofcourse, it is expected since it is a classic. And I’ve read it far too late in life.
Final Analysis:
Read it. It’s worth your time if you have a slight spiritual streak in you. For the rational mind, forget it. The narrow realm of reason will never grasp the power of the beyond.
Favourite Quote:
“…wisdom cannot be passed on. Wisdom which a wise man tries to pass on to someone always sounds like foolishness.”
“And if time is not real, then the gap which seems to be between the world and the eternity, between suffering and blissfulness, between evil and good, is also a deception.”
