The story is an interesting mystery about the murder of a high school student. The plot begins with Simon serving detention with four other students. Simon dies while in detention and the four students are the main suspects. Besides the mystery that surrounds his murder, the story captures the lives, thoughts, struggles and relationships of high school students very well. The five main characters are covered in great detail, each with their separate lives, dreams, aspirations and difficulties. How friends and families affect adolescents comes out quite clearly in the story.
The story is well written, captures the reader’s interest. I am sure there would be many who would read it in one sitting. I made the terrible mistake of watching the televised series midway the book. This made me lose interest in the book as (I thought) I know the story. However, the book is far better than the series, although the series in itself was good. There are of course some differences. I recommend the book instead of the series, but I am biased.
It is the first of a three part series and I look forward to reading the other two.
