‘What I know for sure’ presents insights that Winfrey has gathered from her life. I used to watch Oprah’s show when I was growing up and this book seemed like a capsule of everything that I had gathered from that. The story of Oprah’s survival against odds has always been inspiring and it is that which led me to pick up this book.
It is interesting to read about the journey of Oprah from her childhood to days of fame and fortune. It takes a lifetime to gain these insights and I am wondering if reading about it makes us gain it faster.
A bit disappointing is that the book is replete with the usual pearls of wisdom- love yourself as much as you love others, learn to say no, do not search for happiness in material things, live in close harmony with nature, etc. But when I thought about it, I felt that this was expected. The anecdotes shared in the book are interesting. It is also engaging to learn about the so many lives that she has touched and probably changed. The biggest lesson that I have learnt from this book is the need to sit back and reflect on what our life experiences, our attitudes and behaviours mean for us. If we do that, I think we will be able to develop our own insights!
