Half Baked Beans
The debutant work by Paneru is in the young adult romance genre oft explored by contemporary Indian writers. The setting is an engineering college, and themes of romance, studies, the futility of studies, placements and life in the semi metropoliton cities have been well explored. All of this ensure that he would be read by college goers.
The plot is simple and although, not completely fresh, the story has a newness to it, which holds appeal. The writer has potential but there is a need to explore depths of meaning in the everyday. The treatment of issues is superficial and lacks perspective. The end is like a TV series that comes to a quick end because of low TRPs. Everyone just dies suddenly. It is a bit disturbing how casually sexual assault, death and suicide can be referred to by the young adult population.
The 150 page book is an easy and quick read and can be finished in a few hours. What is extremely annoying in the whole book is the quite apparent need for editing. The language is in a huge need for improvement in terms of grammar and vocabulary.
