Author: R K Narayan
Reading Time: 8-10 metro rides
About the Book:
The book is the story of a middle aged woman, Savitri, who tolerates an egoist, chauvinist, harsh and detached husband. Her three children, along with her husband, her two contrasting friends, and the affairs of running the household occupy her life. Her thoughts about a devoted and dutiful wife, accepting everything that her husband says /does have been vividly described. Infact, the description of thoughts of the husband and wife have lent great depth to the book. These descriptions also play a significant role in understanding the perspectives of the protagonists. Although, the book is replete with many interesting characters, whose thoughts, I would personally be interested in listening to. The other woman in the book, who becomes, Savitri’s husband’s “sister”, the office accountant, the cook, and Ponni, who is Savitri’s savior; are all very interesting.
The story is slow moving, with not many twists and turns. And it is only a description of a situation. Sort of like a snippet of one’s life. It doesn’t have a beginning or an end. Reading it gives you the feeling that you’ve met someone at a railway platform. You talk for a while, sharing lives and then move your separate paths. Not knowing what is happening in the others’ life. Maybe not even bothering.
