Chronicle of a Corpse Bearer

Mistry’s fictional autobiography of a Parsi corpse bearer is a tale marked by the many dimensions of what is often considered to be a mundane life. Struggles to survive in pitiful job circumstances, face constant discrimination, and live an ordinary life as a son, a husband and a father have been woven together in a gripping narrative. By the end of the novel, you would hope for some positivity, a glimmer of hope and happiness. In that, the book is depressing in reminding you of the hum drum of everyday life that does not seem to change much across professions.

The tale is unique in covering a community that has rarely been talked about, or even acknowledged. Mistry’s writing is clear and simple. At least in this book, it is somewhat dry.
