Janta Store is a story of three friends written in first person narrative of one of the three protagonists. The story revolves around the three friends’ experiences in college, hostels, and coffee shops. Much of the story revolves around university politics. A thinner, parallel strand revolves around the love interests of two of the protagonists.
I guess young adults would like the book and I don’t fault the author on his writing style. However, there is a rare book that I have disliked for the content as much as this one. Even with politics as the mainstay, I found the characters to be petty, power hungry, and arrogant. The story is replete with characters representing the stereotypical misdirected young man. If we go by the book, this story may be the way every college going young man would desire to have as his life story. It is disappointing if this is the reality. And if it is not, then it is disappointing that such a negative, mistrustful narrative was to be written.
