A work of fiction, 1984 is a brilliant piece by Orwell, on the hunger for power, human instinct, and social class struggle. Critiquing what he foresaw as the likely outcome of the downfall of capitalism, Orwell’s descriptive accounts of the new social order will make you rethink the principles of socialism.
Orwell has chosen a common middle class protagonist, thus resonating with most of his audience. The role of the intellgentsia in the rise of a new social order bring to light the inevitability of the need to accept inequality as a social reality. His description of the use of what are now existing technological measures to control not just life, but also thoughts is a bit unnerving. Although this may be seen as a love story as well, it is hardly a light read. Orwell makes the reader think, question and wonder about social class relations.
This book should not be read without familiarity with the basics of political thought and class relations. It would serve as a good read but its meaning may not be fully captured. It is an all time classic and thus an automatic recommended read. However, be prepared for mood swings and a sense of disillusionment and meaninglessness while you read.
