The Shadow Lines is one of the earlier works of Ghosh. I picked it up as part of a reading challenge. The temptation was to read one of his books since I haven’t read any of Ghosh’s works earlier. I was a bit disappointed, and I believe his other books are better.
The story revolves around a young man’s fascination with a woman, Ila and his inability to express his feelings. The novel is set against the backdrop of partition and independence movement in India. The narrator’s admiration for his cousin and attraction towards Ila, is disapproved by his grandmother. While there are traces of silent rebellion, a long lost love, and history of partition, the novel failed to be captivating. It is slow moving and probably I just didn’t pick it up at the right time. It was a struggle to finish it. Having said that, I am going to pick up another Amitav Ghosh soon.
