NEP 2020 on Teacher Education
Two key points of emphasis of NEP 2020 for teachers are:
- nurturing teachers through Indian knowledge, culture and ethos
- innovation and advancements in pedagogy
Given the sub standard quality of teacher education institutions in the country, the regulatory mechanism will be strengthened. NEP 2020 recommends the development of quality and multidisciplinary institutions in education.
The policy recommends that all existing stand alone institutions offering two year B.Ed will have to shift to four year integrated programmes in multidisciplinary settings by 2030. The curricula has to included emphasis on early childhood care and education and Indian knowledge. In addition, the policy emphasises innovation in pedagogic knowledge. The unmet demands are to be met through online platforms including SWAYAM and DIKSHA.
Procedures and Approaches towards Teachers
The policy recommends that four year integrated teacher education programmes be supplemented with two year BEds for those who have completed their undergraduate programmes. Further post BEd programmes will help students to specialise in leadership and management in education, as well as stage specific education.
